In 1985, a generous gift by educational philanthropist Eugene M. Lang enabled The New School to turn a small liberal arts program for traditional-age students into a full four-year college, which was named for its benefactor. Through 27 years of growth, the mission of Eugene Lang College was and is informed by the values of its namesake: to foster critical thinking, social justice, and cross-cultural understanding.
Centered in New York City's Greenwich Village, The New School is the very definition of an urban university. At Lang, the vibrant, cosmopolitan landscape of New York is the campus. The vast intellectual and cultural resources of this city are integrated into the curriculum at every level—in the classroom and out into the city itself through a wealth of partnerships, internships, and service-learning programs. At the heart of Eugene Lang College is a deep commitment to a liberal arts education that reaches across and beyond traditional areas of study. Students pursue connections among the humanities, fine arts, and social and natural sciences through a curriculum that includes both traditional and innovative majors, minors, and interdisciplinary programs.
Described by the Princeton Review as the best college in the country for encouraging debate and discussion, Eugene Lang College has a rigorous program of study based on a seminar approach to teaching and learning. Students from across the country and around the world come to Lang to study with a world-class faculty, intern at prestigious organizations, and immerse themselves in the world of Greenwich Village and New York City. In 2011, about 1,500 students are enrolled at Lang. They are taught by more than 150 faculty members, 90 percent of whom hold a PhD or equivalent degree, an impressive student-faculty ratio.
Lang offers the advantages of a traditional small college but with access to the resources of a leading university. The New School enrolls more than 10,000 undergraduate and graduate students in more than 90 degree programs in the arts and sciences, management, design, and performing arts. It supports research institutes and exciting public programs. Every year, The New School launches successful economists and actors, fashion designers and urban planners, dancers and philosophers, business managers and conductors, filmmakers and political scientists, architects and jazz musicians—creative energy flows through every division of the university. Welcome to Eugene Lang College, a thriving intimate academic community in an amazing historic university in a legendary neighborhood of the greatest city in the world.
